For the occasion of the Holland Festival, the Dutch National Ballet has invited two major contemporary artists to create new works: the Flemish-Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui who is making his first piece for a Dutch company and the Englishman David Dawson. Although their backgrounds and choreographic styles are totally different, they both share a boundless thirst for adventure.

The internationally renowned Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui keeps on surprising his audiences with exceptional productions and cooperative ventures. Sometimes he works with practically untrained dancers, and sometimes with Buddhist monks or a star dancer like Akram Khan. Cherkaoui started off as an autodidact, but then went on to train in modern dance. He soon developed into an exceptional dancer and one of todays most striking young choreographers. His productions often look like fantastic stories, yet at the same time they refer to everyday reality. For the Dutch National Ballet, he is making an intimate work for a small group of dancers, to music by the Polish composer Szymon Brzoska.
Nowadays, the Englishman David Dawson is based in Berlin, from where he works as a freelance choreographer. He has previously worked as a dancer and resident choreographer with the Dutch National Ballet and as resident choreographer with SemperOper Ballett in Dresden. Unlike Cherkaoui, Dawsons work is based on classical ballet technique, although he interprets it in a very personal and modern-poetic way. His premiere work for the Dutch National Ballet will be a piece for a large ensemble, to music by the English composer, DJ and multimedia artist Robin Rimbaud, who is better known as Scanner, because of his use of mobile phones and police scanners during live performances.
